Facts & Myths of Sewing Machine Oil: Your Essential Guide
When it comes to sewing machine oil, there are countless misconceptions about where, how often, and how much to apply. This guide will separate fact from fiction to help you care for your sewing machine properly and ensure it operates at peak performance. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned sewer, understanding proper lubrication is key. Let’s break it down.
Oiling the Sewing Hook: The Most Critical Area
In our service department, we never use grease, and neither should you. The only lubricant you need is light, clear sewing machine oil. This oil should have a consistency similar to water. Avoid using products like 3-in-1 oil, Teflon lubricants, or WD-40, as these can gum up or harden over time, causing damage to your machine.
We recommend using a high-quality oiler, like the one we sell in our store, which allows precise application—dispensing just one drop at a time. Proper oiling tools and high-quality sewing machine oil are affordable investments that will save you trouble down the road.
On modern sewing machines, access to oiling spots may be limited, but the sewing hook is always accessible. This area is critical because it’s the main source of noise, friction, and wear. Different sewing machine brands have varying hook designs:
- Bernina and Pfaff machines: These feature metal-on-metal hook systems that require a drop of oil every 8 sewing hours. Before oiling, clean the "hook race" thoroughly to remove debris and lint. Misidentifying the hook race or over-oiling can lead to problems.
- Drop-in bobbin machines (Janome, Brother, Singer, Baby Lock): These have plastic bobbin cases that ride on metal hooks. While oiling is less critical here, a small drop can reduce friction and noise.
If you're unsure where your hook race is, stop by our store—we’re happy to show you! Proper lubrication of the sewing hook reduces wear and keeps your machine quiet and efficient.
Other Key Areas to Oil
The ability to oil other areas of your sewing machine depends on the model and its design. Older machines provide more access for maintenance. As a rule of thumb, apply oil wherever you see metal-on-metal movement, including:
- Needle bar, presser bar, and needle threader shafts: If you can open the side cover, these areas can be oiled.
- Hook drive shaft: Accessible from the underside of your machine.
- Top shaft and take-up linkages: If you can open the top cover, apply oil to these components.
- Upper looper shaft on sergers: This is a critical area for serger maintenance.
Remember to apply just one drop of oil at a time. Avoid oiling areas you can’t see or access safely. Refer to your sewing machine’s owner’s manual for specific oiling and cleaning instructions.
Professional Maintenance Matters
Even with regular at-home oiling, professional servicing is essential. In our shop, we disassemble the machine casing to reach areas that aren’t accessible to the average user. We also know the critical points to address for each make and model. For everyday sewers, annual servicing is recommended. For occasional users, servicing every 2-3 years is sufficient.

- Flexible, Extendable Spout: The spout extends to provide an additional 14 inches of length, allowing you to oil every critical spot with ease. When not in use, the spout retracts for convenient storage.
- Premium Quality Oil: Contains 4 oz (118 mL) of stainless, Lily White sewing machine oil. This lightweight oil is perfect for reducing friction and noise while preventing wear and tear on your sewing machine.
- Technician-Approved: This is the same high-quality oil our sewing machine technicians use when servicing machines, ensuring professional-level care for your equipment.
- Safe and Effective: Ideal for most sewing machines, including all models designed with a drop-in bobbin (horizontal rotary hook system).
This is the oil to get for nearly every home sewing machine: Janome, Baby Lock, Brother, Singer, Juki, Viking, Pfaff, Elna, some Bernina.
Not the right oil for Bernina machines with a B9 hook system (Jumbo bobbins; e.g. B480, B570, B770, etc.) and Bernina with an CB Hook System (oscillating hook; e.g. 830/930 record, 1130, 1230, 1260, 1530, etc.).

Bernina Sewing Machine Oil
This is the oil to get for the Bernina machines with a B9 hook system (Jumbo bobbins; e.g. B480, B570, B770, etc.) and Bernina with an CB Hook System (oscillating hook; e.g. 830/930 record, 1130, 1230, 1260, 1530, etc.).
Compared to the drop-in bobbin machines, these particular Bernina machines are designed in such a way so that there is more metal-on-metal friction between the hook and the hook race. Therefore, they require this special yellow oil that is thicker than the Zoom Spout Oiler.
